VITA – Biodynamic Viticulture – Adaptation of the biodynamic viticulture concept to the conditions of Eastern Europe

The VITA project is developing an adapted Biodynamic viticulture concept for Central Eastern Europe to support the wine growers in the conversion process. Biodynamic wine production can be seen as a well performing model for ecological development in line with consumer demand. Biodynamic methods enable viticulture to adapt optimally to climate change by increasing biodiversity and the water storage capacity of the soil, ensuring continuos growth of the humus layer, binding high amounts of CO2 and strengthening the resilience of the vines. Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia and Hungary have each selected 6 representative organic and biodynamic pioneers for case studies to learn from best practices and success stories and to gain a better understanding of the specific climatic and cultural circumstances that form the conditions for conversion. The findings are discussed at regional conferences and recommendations are made on how to overcome obstacles to the conversion. In each country, a new conversion training will be developed, tested and evaluated with the support of the associated partners from the vocational training institutions. The new training courses will offer students, wine growers and trainers the chance to update their knowledge. Results will be made available to interested wine growers, vocational training institutions, regional wine associations and other national organisations in the Biodynamic movement.
